International retailers frequently emphasise the cognitive aspects of the
retail
internationalisation process. Examples of this abound but include Tesco's
utilisation of
embedded research teams within Japanese families to monitor consumption
behaviour
prior to their acquisition of the Japanese C Two chain in 2003. Within the
international
retail literature, however, there has been limited detailed empirical or
conceptual
research on international retail learning (Clarke and Rimmer, 1997). Thus,
although
learning has played an important role in shaping the way retail companies
behave in
practice, comparatively few studies actually address international retail
learning.

Robert Lowson and Helen Peck Keywords Supply chain management, Fashion
industry, Agile production Fashion markets are synonymous with rapid change
and, as a result, commercial success or failure is largely determined by the
organisation?s flexibility and responsiveness. Responsiveness is
characterised by short time-to-market, the ability to scale up (or down)
quickly and the rapid incorporation of consumer preferences into the design
process. In this paper it is argued that conventional organisational
structures and forecast-driven supply chains are not adequate to meet the

Instead, the requirement is for the creation of an agile
